The children's rides, playfully modelled from real spaceships, blend in perfectly with the other-wordly skyscrapers in the background. I took this photo at a carnival being held in the People's Square park, right outside the largest metro stop in Shanghai (24 exits!). When I was last here studying in 2009, Shanghai was an urban sprawl with pre-Expo construction. Like Beijing cleaned up, rebuilt and refurbished considerably for the 2008 Olympics, Shanghai’s range of futuristic, uber-modern skyscrapers mixed in with colonial-era architecture has been aesthetically perfected. There is no scaffolding site, at least in the downtown core.
