Peninsula BeijingWhy we love it: A modern day stay with a world-class hospitality brand
- Four dining outlets featuring a variety of global bites
- Cutting edge technology and design
- Private, in-suite cinemas
Situated in the heart of Beijing’s Wangfujing shopping district, this property opened in 1989 as the city’s first luxury hotel and underwent an extensive modernization in 2017. That overhaul brought with it 230 lavishly appointed guest suites, with nearly 20 165-square-metre Beijing Suites (complete with private mini cinemas featuring 80-inch screens and surround sound audio). Regardless of the room type, expect high-end perks throughout the stay, including tablet technology, deluxe marble bathrooms with walk-in showers, and bedside electronic panels with lighting and temperature controls. Though the latter can be easily used for in-room dining, it’s best to venture beyond the room to any of the hotel’s four dining and drinking outlets, including Huang Ting, a modern Cantonese restaurant with dim sum favorites like barbecued pork buns, sticky rice chicken and conpoy, and braised congee with scallops. When there, keep an eye out for décor details incorporating the phoenix, a sign of good fortune in China for more than 8,000 years that is prominently highlighted in several aspects of the hotel’s design (including a hand-carved version adorning the lobby’s onyx Spirit Wall).
