Built in 2011 and designed by Wilkinson Eyre Architects, this 235-meter-long (770-foot) bridge links the communities on the two sides of the River Foyle, the Protestant (Unionist) Waterside to the east and the Catholic (Nationalist) Bogside to the west. The two white “arms” of the bridge, pointing in opposite directions, symbolically unite a long-divided city. The pedestrian bridge also has a cycling path that stretches from the Guildhall in Waterside to Ebrington Square—a military parade ground that now hosts open-air art exhibits and other events—and St. Columb’s Park, on the Bogside.
