A Glimpse of the History of the Serbian Orthodox Church
At the edge of Pejë and the beginning of the Rugova Gorge lies a compound surrounded by a stone wall and two guard gates. This is the location of the Patriarchate of the Serbian Orthodox Church. Stepping within the walls transports you back to the 1300-1400s. Soft grass is slowly overtaking stone ruins. Four churches coated in colored frescoes are watched over by nuns, who will show you the grounds. Gardens of brightly-colored flowers dot the compound. The Bistreca River flows just outside the gates, where visitors can catch lovely views of the mountains in Rugova. Overall, the Patriarchate of Pejë offers a quiet and lovely escape from the city life in Pejë.
