Tortuguero is remote, and is nearly impossible to access. Key word: nearly. In fact, there are no roads, and so it is accessible only by charter plane or boat. The best way to get there is to purchase a package with one of the eco-lodges located near the National Park. Starting in San Jose, lodge staff picks up guests and busses them 3 hours through Guapiles to the boat terminal where Route 32 ends. From there, it is another hour and a half in a boat on the canal to Tortuguero. Being in Tortuguero is truly staying in the middle of the rainforest, where all surrounding landscape is a winding, viney mass of leafy vegetation, and heavy rainfall is expected at least once a day.
