In the 12th century Grasse was the tanning center of France, famous for its exquisite leather gloves. Five hundred years later locals realized that planting fields of fragrant flowers would combat the stench created by tanning. It was so effective they began extracting essences from the aromatic blooms and soon they had a booming perfume industry. Each spring, violets, jasmine and mimosa perfume the air; Molinard and Galimard are among the several distilleries that can be toured in Grasse and the medieval hilltop town of Èze.
