Boulevard Toussaint Louverture, Port-au-Prince, Haiti

With as clogged as the streets are in and around Port-au-Prince, and as rugged as the driving conditions can be along the mostly mountainous environs outside of Haiti’s capital, it might seem impossible to get around the country with anything even approaching ease. Wrong. Well, wrong so long as you’re heading to Cap-Haitien. Haiti’s “Second City” is second to none when it comes to historical attractions, Sans-Souci Palace and the famed mountaintop fortress, Citadelle Henri Christophe tops among them. No visit to Haiti is complete without seeing these wonders. The best way to get to Cap-Haitien for those staying in Port-au-Prince: Sunrise Airways. During my last visit to the Marriott Port-au-Prince, the helpful guest services staff helped us arrange a day-trip to Cap-Haitien, including round-trip flights on Sunrise, Haiti’s hometown airline. Departing at 7am, the 30-minute flight had us exploring the ruins of Sans-Souci by 8am. A return flight option departing Cap-Haitien at 4:15pm gave us plenty of time to trek up to the Citadelle and enjoy lunch at the Lakou Lakay Cultural Center, just a few blocks from Sans-Souci.
