SURF LIFE Bali Yoga Surf Retreat: An Experience to RememberThe SURF LIFE Yoga Surf Retreat is much more than yoga and surfing, it is a life-changing adventure. While a philosophy is woven throughout the retreat and it follows a general program—blending yoga and surfing lessons with thoughtful writing exercises, soul-searching discussions and meditation—each day unfolds naturally and spontaneously.
Rick Cowley originally created the retreats to support young adults who had recently gone through cancer (he still runs free retreats for them). As a surfer, yoga instructor, and cancer survivor himself, it was a deeply personal project too. The program was such a positive success that he wanted to share the transformational experience with every visitor to Bali. Retreats are now held for all levels of surfers on Bali's Bukit Peninsula and also Australia and Mexico.
When we weren't in the water during our seven day retreat, we seized every opportunity for adventure and took our motorbikes everywhere. We rode to see a sunset at Uluwatu and sunrise at the "secret" Pandawa Beach, stopping at local spots for delicious meals, zipping into Kuta to get a tattoo, heading to Jimbaran Bay for a seafood feast, going to a Kecak cultural dance at Uluwatu Temple, and seeing a surf film festival on the sand in Seminyak.
The SURF LIFE Yoga Surf Retreat may not be for everyone. But for those who are looking for something more and do attend, you will go on an inspiring and memorable journey... as I did.
