The Seventeen Contradas of Siena
During my time in Siena, I learned of the 17 contradas that divide this small city. It is hard to imagine that in city of this size, there were originally 59 contradas in the Middle Ages when they were established for military purposes. Over time, the contradas lost administrative power, and now represent simply civic pride and the most local patriotism you could get. Each contrada is represented by their own flag, symbol, and colors, individually host their own events and celebrations, and most importantly, they race amongst each other in the Palio horse race. Learn of your contrada during your stay. For me, I left with my own sense of Drago pride
