The Palacio La Moneda is the seat of executive power in Chile (the legislature is based in Valparaíso). This imposing late-18th-century building originally served as the national mint—hence the name, La Moneda (“the coin”). La Moneda is also known in modern times as the last stronghold of former president Salvador Allende, whose statue now stands opposite. Courtyards and cultural exhibitions are open to the public at the adjacent Centro Cultural de La Moneda. Open daily.
