A restored sugar mansion following the decline of the sugarcane industry on the Island, the Pahala Plantation Cottages are an ideal place to stay if you're on the Big Island for an extended period of time, or with a large group (you can rent the entire plantation house, which has 8 rooms).
Located in a quiet town between Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park and Punalu’u Black Sand Beach, the Plantation House was once the home for sugar mill workers as well as the local school teachers. It is also a stone's throw from the must-visit Ka'u Coffee Farm.
Once the Ka'u Sugar Factory was closed down, the residents took to other agricultural commodities—from coffee to macadamia nuts. The food is delicious and prepared by a local chef, and it is a cultural bed and breakfast. A true hidden gem.
