The Palace of the Dukes of Bragança is a National Monument of the 15th century (classified in 1910), built by King Afonso; with architectural features of a fortified house and several cylindrical chimneys. Unfortunately it was abandoned for several centuries which took it to ruins; however in 1937 a rebuilding of the palace takes place, only ending 22 years later. In 1959, it reopens as a museum with collections of the 17th and 18th centuries. The collection includes a set of counters (Indo-Portuguese, Moorish-Mudéjar and Spanish), which are adorned by a collection of porcelain of Companhia das Índias and also by Portuguese ceramics of leading factories of the time. The museum is located on the 1st floor; the 2nd floor is a wing for the Presidency of the Republic. Don’t forget to also appreciate the building from outside. Keep your eyes open because you can see the building from for example the historic centre (at least the top). On the right side of the building, there are some garden benches. With the sun warming me up from behind, it was a great spot for some reading. Buy the ticket that includes a visit to the Alberto Sampaio Museum.
