my friend and I were walking around the Plaza in Old Town early one morning when a red pick-up truck pulled up beside us. In the back were several dozen skulls. We got into conversation with the driver who told us he went into Mexico to the ranches and asked them to save the "good" skulls for him and he paid the ranchers for them and then brought them to ALBQ to the gift shops to sell to tourists. The "good" ones - he explained- were the ones where the fragile nose bone wasn't broken off. I asked if I could photograph the truck bed and he readily agreed as he was proud of the quality of his product.
