Travemünde’s oldest lighthouse can be found next to the Maritim Strandhotel. Built in 1539, it’s one of the oldest such structures on the entire German Baltic coast. In service until 1972, today it houses a maritime museum that, across eight floors, explains the history of the lighthouse as well as showcasing lighthouse techniques in general via models of sea lanterns and optical devices. Climbing the 142 steps to the top isn’t easy, but the views across Travemünde, Lübeck and the coast are well worth the effort.
