War Scratchings

The walled old town in Nicosia is covered in graffiti dating back to various periods of turmoil in the capital: the 1955 fight for independence; the ethnic conflict of the '60s; and the war and occupation of 1974. On this side street, old and fading propaganda slogans are now covered in newer (and cruder) ones from 2003. "OXI" stands for "No" against unification with the Turkish Cypriots, and "NAI" stands for "Yes".

My friend Natalie (pictured) now documents all little traces of past political drama in the old city for a photo project she's presented on in France and Germany.
