Okonomiyaki Jumbo Honjin
Kyoto boast some of Japan’s best restaurants, including the most exquisitely ornate kaiseki meals in the world. But when you’ve had your fill of haute, head to this family-run joint serving up more everyday fare of okonomiyaki, savory Japanese pancakes made with a base of flour, eggs, and shredded cabbage, then dressed with a zigzag of mayo and okonomiyaki sauce, dried bonito flakes, and aonori seaweed. Locals love it because they serve so many different varieties—with squid, shrimp, kimchee, pork belly, or beef. The tables are equipped with DIY grills, so diners can expect to do some of the cooking themselves.
