Okonomiyaki Jumbo HonjinKyoto boasts some of Japan’s best restaurants, including the most exquisitely ornate kaiseki in the world. But when you’ve had your fill of haute, head to this family-run joint offering up the more everyday fare of okonomiyaki, savory Japanese pancakes made with a base of flour, eggs, and shredded cabbage, then dressed with a zigzag of mayo and okonomiyaki sauce (a mix of ketchup, soy sauce, and Worcestershire sauce), dried bonito flakes, and aonori (dried green laver or seaweed). Locals love okonomiyaki because it can be served in many variations: with squid, shrimp, kimchi, pork belly, or beef. The tables are equipped with DIY grills, so diners can expect to do some of the cooking themselves.
