Okonomiyaki Jumbo Honjin
Kyoto is known for having some of Japan’s best restaurants with some of the most exquisitely ornate kaiseki meals in the world and a gastro cuisine is not to miss. But when you’ve had your fill of haute, head to this family run joint serving up more everyday fare of okonomiyaki, savory Japanese pancakes made with a base of flour, eggs, shredded cabbage and then dressed with a zig zag of mayo and okonomiyaki sauce, dried bonito flakes and aonori seaweed. Locals love it because they serve several so many different varieties—with squid, shrimp, kimchee, pork belly or beef. The tables are equipped with DIY grills, so like nabe hot pots, sukiyaki, and yakiniku (charcoal grilled meat), diners can expect to do some of the cooking themselves.
