Groundbreaking Botswana Rhino Translocation & Conservation work with andBeyond
In my mind, experiential travel always involves education, preferably hands-on, in-your-face education. And this experience was exactly that. I had the rare and wonderful opportunity to witness six highly endangered white rhino being released into the safe haven of Botswana’s Okavango Delta after undertaking a gruelling 6 000 mile journey by road from South Africa. I stood in the acclimatisation enclosure, up close and personal with a massive 2.5 tonne tranquilised female rhino, trying to keep her calm and steady as we attached a tracking device to her ankle. All of this was achieved amidst dust, adrenaline, concern and absolute awe, not to mention an audience of curious onlookers including the President of Botswana himself. What better education could there possibly be on the trials, heartache and magnificent reward of active conservation so proudly practiced by &Beyond?
