Hike in an Otherworldly Landscape at Ojito Wilderness Area
Now a federally designated wilderness area, Ojito is a desert landscape an hour west of Albuquerque, New Mexico, near the town of Cuba. To visit the protected lands, you'll drive through those of the Zuni Native American reservation. Hikes will take you along and near steep-sided mesas with multi-colored shale of yellow, red, green, and black. There are two set routes: one that departs from the Seismosaurus Trailhead, the other from the Hoodoo Trailhead. If you're only going to hike one, opt for the Hoodoo Trailhead where you'll find otherworldly badlands with rock pinnacles, spires, and cap rocks.
