Bird-watchers are spoiled for choice in New Zealand, particularly along the coast of the Bay of Plenty. Ohiwa Harbour is an unspoiled estuary fronted by Ohope Beach just outside Whakatane, an 11-kilometer (seven-mile) stretch of white sand that has views of Moutohora (Whale Island) and Whakaari (White Island). It shelters a mass of migratory birds, including Australasian gannets, grey-faced petrels, herons, gulls and terns.
