Ohara is a small town known for its fishing port (in fact, roughly 60 percent of all of the ise-ebi, or Japanese spiny lobster, caught in Japan comes from Ohara Port). It is about a 1 1/2 hour train ride from Tokyo Station on the Wakashio express. The overall atmosphere of the place is very relaxed and friendly, much like most of the countryside in Japan.

The Children's Brigade

Youngsters participate in the annual Hadaka Matsuri (Naked Festival) in the town of Ohara, located in the Boso Peninsula of Chiba Prefecture. The festival (there isn’t any actual nudity—the raciest scenes involve men with their chests half-bared), held on September 23-24 every year, dates back to the Edo era and is intended to bring a successful harvest and good fishing. The highlight of the festival is called “shiofumi”, when 18 mikoshi (floats) from local shrines are carried out to sea young men clad in loincloths to the encouraging cheers of spectators while the patrons of the shrines sing traditional songs.
