Visit the Oakland Museum for a Look at California Life

With art, history, and the natural sciences all under one roof, the Oakland Museum has been working to address the many facets of life in California since it opened its doors more than 40 years ago.

After undergoing a recent renovation and transformation, the 300,000-square foot space in Oakland has become even more adept at nurturing the local community by integrating the museum’s programs and collections, serving as a public forum, and providing more opportunities for visitor and volunteer participation.

Check the website for current exhibits and programs, and make sure to check out the other events that the Oakland Museum has to offer: the annual White Elephant Sale, Northern California’s largest rummage sale, or Friday Nights @ OMCA, a weekly team-up with Off the Grid roaming food trucks for a late-night party outside the museum.

The Oakland Museum is open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11 am to 5 pm, Fridays from 11 am to 9 pm, and Saturdays and Sundays from 11 am to 5 pm.

Dias de los Muertos Exhibit every year

Every year the OMCA hosts a Day of the Dead exhibition which is one of the best the Bay Area has to offer. Celebrating local communities, you'll find installations and altars from a diverse mix of cultures. Local artists & Oakland school children create altars each year. Paying tribute to California's past and present this exhibit is not to be missed. The museum also brings together collections of art, history and natural science under one roof (3 exhibition halls) to tell the extraordinary stories of California and its people. Lots of hands-on exhibits. There's also a lovely sculpture garden where you can have a picnic. Check website for special events & pricing.

All things California

The Oakland Museum of California is a great museum located near Oakland's Chinatown. Three galleries feature all things California: art, natural sciences and history. Interactive exhibits are educational and fun for all ages. Wander the museum grounds and you'll see large scale sculptures from the California ceramics movement by pioneering artists as Viola Frey and Stephen de Staebler. Nice gift shop and café as well. Check online for special events and exhibitions.

Night at the Museum

Art, Music, Food Trucks, Local Brews --- that describes a great Friday night at the Oakland Museum. Every Friday the museum becomes a big block party for the community. Museum admission is half priced, vintners and microbreweries ply their products, local bands play on the lower plaza and food trucks line the streets. It's one big happy place. All ages are welcome so you'll see families, young hipsters, retired cops, business types and neighborhood folks. Great place for date nights or gathering with friends. The night I was there I grabbed a Snakebite (beer mixed with hard cider), devoured a filipino taco and sat outside in the cool evening listening to the latin band. Fantastic way to experience Oakland's best and it's a cheap night out as well! Every Friday night – not to be missed.
