Despite being from the land of Hockey, I'd never been to a professional game (I know, I know, I did attend a few games in college though). And, while the NHL was locked-out back in the states, I figured I'd get a laugh out of my hockey-obsessed friends back home.
The Eisbaren Berlin (Berlin Polar Bears) squared off against the Hamburg team on a Sunday afternoon. The crowd trickled in at first, but the atmosphere soon electrified. The atmosphere in the venue reminded me of a good European football crowd with cheeky chanting (the away crowd put up a valiant effort) and flag waving.
The arena is located near public transportation and the eclectic Kreuzberg neighborhood. It's family friendly and ticket prices were fairly cheap (12 euro with a student discount).
Though the Eisbaren lost it was still a great experience. I've always felt that if you want to understand a foreign culture, sit next to them at a sporting event.
