There are few things more enchanting than taking the slow train through the Hill Country of Sri Lanka. We train hopped for a few days from Columbo to Kandy, then from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya. The train is slow, clunky and crowded, but it winds through some of the most beautiful countryside, full of tea plantations, steep jungle, little villages and waterfalls. When the train stopped at stations, men would come on selling curried peanuts, mangoes, pineapples and other Sri Lankan delicacies. Musicians would wander the cars entertaining the passengers with tambourines and songs looking for a few rupees to take home.
