A visit to Sri Lanka's Hill Country is not complete without experiencing at least part of the train journey from Kandy to Badulla. The scenery changes as the train rounds each corner and with time of day, unfolding panoramas of tea plantations swirled around the hilltops below the track. The train trip itself is memorable, whether on the tidy blue express from Colombo, or the local, with its eclectic mix of carriages.
If air-conditioning matters to you, book 1st class and reserve your seat in advance. Otherwise, join the locals in 2nd or 2rd class, and just hang out the windows. On the local, a first class booking will get you fresh air and a rear-facing picture window. Either train trip will reward you with one stunning vista after another, experienced at the pace of a by-gone era.
Vendors board the train at several stops, selling delicious vadai, spicy curry-leaf peanuts and other treats.
