Experience traditional Fijian culture in the chiefly village of Nukubalavu
Home to the highest chief in the Savusavu region of Vanua Levu, a visit to Nukubalavu Village is a great introduction to the lively life and cultural protocol of a Fijian village.
Start with a welcome by the elders who will walk you around the thatched huts where women prepare pandanus to make crafts or can be found weaving baskets. Children smile from doorways as coconut palms from the copra (coconut oil) plantations wave in the breeze.
The visit culminates in a sevusevu ceremony where you or your guide presents kava to the chief and you drink the muddy concoction together, in a circle to create a peaceful bond.
