Núcleao Arquelogico da Rua dos Correeiros
Roman ruins are everywhere in Lisbon but most sit buried under modern times. Hidden under a Millenium BCP Bank on Rua dos Correeiros in Baixa, however, you'll find tiers of ruins (Iron Age, Roman, Visigoth, Islamic) stacked on top of each other like an historical later cake. Free and fascinating archaeologist-led tours (book in advance!) depart on the hour Monday to Saturday and descend into the depths, where you'll see surprisingly intact remnants of a Roman sardine factory, a Roman home, exquisite mosaics and a Visigoth grave, among other fascinating highlights. A tour here will leave you wondering just what exactly lies beneath your feet everywhere you walk across one of Europe's oldest cities.
