Like many Brazilian cities and towns, Maceió is filled with churches. The largest is the mid-19th-century Catedral Metropolitana, which is dedicated to Maceió’s patron saint, Our Lady of Joy, or Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres. (The faithful believe her to be responsible for the Portuguese defeat of the Dutch in this northeastern region of Brazil.) Nearby in the downtown area, you'll find the pink and neoclassical Deodoro Theater, built in 1910. It hosts music concerts with such Brazilian superstars as Caetano Veloso and Gal Costa.
