Agreed—a visit to a petroleum museum doesn't sound like a party, but this 3-D explanation of the industry that built modern Norway is packed with riveting facts, intricate models, and compelling human stories of life on an oil rig. The museum even addresses the environmental issues in a refreshingly honest way, although not everyone will agree on its conclusion. Kids will love the graffiti-covered playground in the front of the museum—it's made from recycled oil rig equipment!

Norwegian Petroleum Museum
You don’t have to be a diehard scientist to enjoy what the Petroleum Museum has to offer. Housed in a slablike building that evokes an oil platform, the museum’s collection of documentary films, photographs and interactive installations explore topics that range from the discovery of “black gold” in the North Sea to oil production and modern-day energy use.
