American Military Cemetery and Memorial

I cannot consider the American Military Cemetery and Memorial an attraction but if you are in the Normandy region this is a must see. The cemetery is the resting place of almost 10.000 American soldiers who fought in WWI and WWII including Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., Medal of Honor recipient, and Quentin Roosevelt, sons of President Theodore Roosevelt. It is a place of beauty and stillness.

American Cemetery and Visitor's Centre

This 172-acre cemetery overlooks Omaha Beach. Omaha Beach is the very beach where many of the armed forces landed and many were killed in action during the June 6, 1944 D-Day invasion and battle. When you arrive, sign the Visitors book in the Visitors building. Also visit the Chapel and the Memorial. There is a stillness and a great silence at the cemetery. This is an unforgettable day trip. There are several different tours available. I would plan one with my travel agent before I depart on my trip.

A Battle Remembered

The memorial overlooking the battlefield of Omaha Beach is moving. Rows and rows of perfectly placed white tombstones as far as you can see. As part of the WWII sites, this is a hard place to stop, but an important one. The memorial includes a museum, movies, and remnants of the famous battle of Omaha Beach and surrounding areas. The cemetery site covers 172.5 acres and contains the graves of 9,387 of our military dead, most of whom lost their lives in the D-Day landings and ensuing operations. On the Walls of the Missing, in a semicircular garden on the east side of the memorial, are inscribed 1,557 names. Rosettes mark the names of those since recovered and identified. As I walked around looking at the gravestones, I couldn’t help but shed a tear.

American Cemetery

It’s hard to believe that this was the site of such a devastating and ghastly attack. This beautiful peaceful site overlooking the Atlantic was the peril of so many young men. It remains untouched since that wretched day but it’s not without remembrance.
