Driving through Kutch in rural India, we turned into the town of Nirona on a whisper that there were some interesting crafts created there. We asked some locals who directed us to just keep walking along the dusty track.
On what seemed like a road to nowhere we eventually reached some rather small and deserted mud houses. We were just about to turn back when someone gestured at us to come a bit closer.
A man soon appeared and attached a rather plain looking wooden stick to a rather old piece of equipment and started turning it. Before we knew it, bright lacquered patterns appeared on the stick, glistening in the light.
It was beautiful I had to buy one, along with another vibrant coloured wooden stand that now holds my precious bracelets.
The best way to replicate this experience, is to not be afraid to go off the beaten track when you visit Kutch. By enquiring with locals at the small villages you will discover some impressive crafts such as this, and take home unique gifts and memories.
