Newport Art Museum
Located just uphill from the port, this American art museum occupies two historic buildings, the Cushing Gallery and the Griswold House. The museum emphasizes work by Rhode Island artists or those who worked in New England. Gilbert Stuart, the Rhode Island–born portraitist whose painting of Washington adorns the dollar bill, is represented in the collection; so are works by the local Impressionist artists Howard Gardiner Cushing and Helena Sturtevant. Contemporary and emerging artists are also included in the galleries and in special exhibitions.
