Nevis Jewish Cemetery

Charlestown, St Kitts & Nevis

Many people are surprised to find a Jewish cemetery in Nevis; and indeed, it reveals a fascinating and little-known aspect of the island’s history. A short stroll from Charlestown’s main street, the site is a grassy area with a handful of graves that date from between 1679 and 1730. Some headstones show still-legible engravings in Hebrew, English and Portuguese, while others are worn and weathered. The location of the associated synagogue and Jewish school has never been discovered.
