Intimate Museum featuring German and Austrian Modern Art
Neue Galerie New York is devoted to early 20th century German and Austrian art and design. Located in a renovated 1914 town house on Fifth Avenue at 86th Street (two short blocks from the Met), the museum consistently presents high quality exhibitions of German Expressionism and Jugendstil visual arts, architecture, and decorative arts. The museum also offers a well-stocked gift shop and two excellent cafes, Café Fledermaus and Café Sabarsky, which serve lunch, dinner, and fine patisserie in a setting recalling turn-of-the-century Vienna. If you count Kirchner, Klimt, Klee, Beckmann, Schiele, Dix et. al. among your friends, short of a trip to Germany
or Vienna, the Neue Gallerie can't be beat.
