Cozumel, Quintana Roo, Mexico
Natural BeautyWhile diving may come to mind first when many people think of Cozumel, there is plenty of natural interest above the sea as well. The Chankanaab Lagoon, Colombia Lagoon, and the State Reserve of Jungle and Wetlands of Cozumel offer opportunities to see unique endemic species, like the Cozumel Island coati and the Cozumel Island raccoon. Birdwatchers will want to bring their checklists, and binoculars, in hope of spotting the Cozumel emerald, the Cozumel wren, or the Cozumel great curassow. And, as it lies on a common flight path for birds traveling between Central America and points north, Cozumel is also an ideal place for sightings of migratory species. Among the heavenly—literally—places that you’ll want to include on your itinerary is El Cielo, an area of shallow and crystal-clear waters where the seafloor is dotted with so many starfish that it has been compared to the night sky.
