Changing The Guard at National Heroes Park, Jamaica

Old bonds to Mother England die hard throughout much of the former British West Indies. Take these two gentlemen, for instance.

You can find them, or another pair just like them, at the National Heroes Park in Kingston, Jamaica. Like the iconic red and black clad Queen's Guard at Buckingham Palace, these Honour Guards stand watch all day, everyday; fully-armed, deadpan serious, stalwart, and unflinching.

The Jamaican Honour Guards also change in a formal ceremony. It’s not nearly as elaborate as the pageantry of Buckingham Palace, but the guards here do change every hour, so you have more opportunities to experience the tradition than the once-a-day show in England.

The National Heroes Park is open daily from 6am to 6pm. You can’t miss it when traveling from New Kingston, Emancipation Park and its surrounding hotels – The Courtleigh Hotel & Suites, Jamaica Pegasus, Knutsford Court – toward the downtown Kingston business district and the waterfront.
