The National Art Museum situated in the Egmore village of Chennai houses it's most prized design and architecture outside of the gallery rather than in. The gallery was built in 1902, but has been closed due to damages, since 2002. This is by no means a deterrent from visiting the lush grounds, the sprawling open air and bronze galleries, a children's museum, playground and hidden courtyards throughout the museum grounds. The 16+ acres were the perfect spot to let the children run about, have a family picnic and spend a day away from the bustle of the city. The museum is open from 9:30-5:00pm and requires a $5 admission fee. The power was rumored to be out the day we visited (it was not) and we are able to tour the grounds and galleries free of charge.
