Since 1972, City Farmer's Nursery has been established in the City Heights neighborhood of San Diego. http://www.cityfarmersnursery.com/ This is the place where we purchased all the native plants for our yard. We like this nursery because it is locally owned, good prices and all their plants are raised organically. And they host all kinds of classes on canning, organic farming, how to raise chickens, etc.
Recently, they remodeled the cafe on their grounds. What was once Nate's Cafe is now something even better. After hiring new chefs and creating a new look, they reopened as Nate's Garden Grill. The produce is purchased from a local organic farm and they carry a lot of local beers on tap as well as local wines by the bottle.
The kitchen is somewhat open air and is found outside on the front patio. The interior of the cafe has been sourced from old barns and most of the furniture was found and refurbished. All of this gives the cafe a homey feel with local flavor.
Pictured here is the Gravlax- made with house-cured salmon, cream cheese, capers, tomatoes, red onions on pretzel bread. The pretzel bread was delicious- toasty crust and fluffy interior. You can get breakfast, brunch or dinner.
After you finish your meal, you can wander about the grounds and check out the plants they carry for sale or the farm animals such as chickens, turkeys, goats, rabbits, etc. They even carry farm fish, such as tilapia.
