Just maybe the South Island's prettiest mountain village, sleepy Naseby makes a good 15-mile round-trip detour when you're cycling the Otago Central Rail Trail. Surrounded by pine forests full of walking paths and mountain-bike tracks, it's also famous for its year-round curling center, and the friendly locals are always looking for curious newbies to share in their favorite alpine sport. During the winter the curling action sometimes moves to nearby frozen lakes, and there's also an ice-skating rink. Factor in cozy bed-and-breakfast accommodations and one of New Zealand's best country pubs, and Naseby is a great place to ease off the travel accelerator for a few days.
