Forest scenery, mountain biking and winter sports
Just maybe the South Island's prettiest mountain village, sleepy Naseby makes a good 24km return detour when you're cycling the Otago Central Rail Trail. Surrounded by pine forests full of walking trails and mountain-bike tracks, it's also famous for its year-round curling centre, and the friendly locals are always looking for curious newbies to share in their favorite alpine sport. During the winter the curling action sometimes moves to nearby frozen lakes, and there's also an ice-skating rink. Factor in cozy bed and breakfast accommodation and one of New Zealand's best country pubs, and Naseby is a great place to ease off the travel accelerator for a few days.
