Narok; The Maasai Mara road town
It can be along, stale drive to Narok, the outpost before venturing on to the Maasai Mara. One traverses the massive Rift Valley escarpment to Mai Mahiu, branching off through into the heart of the vast picture of uninhabited hills and (in rainy reason) large pools of water. And onwards, by mainly untroubled paved road, to Narok. I estimated it took us a good 3 hours from Nairobi.
The town itself is small, though hardly the smallest. Lodges and hotels line the main artery road, off which the Nyayo-era (tenure of the former President Daniel Moi). monument pictured above stands. There's a good choice of local nyama-choma (roast meat) joints one can try out on na self drive tour. There is a small museum here too, although we didn't get the time to check it out.
This is the Maasai heartland, as good as any to buy bead bracelets, necklaces and of course the crimson-themed wraps.
