Do you ever wonder what it would feel like to be a character in the Great Gatsby? You can head over to Napier, NZ, to find out. Every year, during the third weekend in February, this small city by the sea hosts Art Deco weekend: a huge festival where everyone comes out dressed in 1920s garb to enjoy live jazz and a vintage airplane show. When we visited, there was a vintage car parade through the main street on Saturday that left us wondering how there can be so many 1920s-1950s era cars in such a compact municipality. On Sunday, there was a Great Gatsby brunch near the beach, complete with lace tablecloths, picnic tents, fine china, and English tea biscuits. Even the children could be seen dressed in old-time garb and playing with vintage toys. This isn't like any other small-town festival; the locals here go all out. Make sure to stay through the entire weekend and you will surely be impressed by their commitment to their heritage.
