Naminoue Shrine Naha Japan
Naminoue Shrine

The main Shinto shrine in Naha, Naminoue Shrine (the name means "above the waves") enjoys a picturesque location overlooking the sea and Naminoue Beach. Originally constructed for the Ryukyuan religion, the shrine was dedicated to Nirai Kanai, the place from which all life originates, according to that belief system. Rebuilt in the years after WWII, the site now consists of a main hall and worship hall as well as several smaller shrines and edifices; pack a picnic and make a morning or afternoon of it.
