Namdaemun Market
Namdaemun is Korea’s largest traditional market. This primarily wholesale marketplace lies next to the ancient South Gate after which it’s named. Alleys swarm with shoppers browsing thousands of stalls. Seeking cheap clothes, housewares, toys, jewelry, or stationery? This is the place to find them. It seems chaotic, but the market is loosely divided into different sections, the most interesting being the food area. Visitors can sample dishes like mandu dumplings, seafood soups, bibimbap rice bowls, and warm hotteok pancakes stuffed with brown sugar. Daring eaters can even nibble on boiled silkworms! Don’t be scared to venture into the market buildings either. Buildings C and D carry discounted handicraft souvenirs and the third level of Building E hosts a colorful flower market.
