Namche Bazar

Namche Bazar, Namche 56000, Nepal

Namche Bazar is a popular village for getting “geared up” on the way up to Mount Everest. It’s an amazing arrangement of tea houses, shops and homes built into the mountain.

Prayer Rocks Surrounding Namche Bazaar

Tibetan Buddhism is prevalent throughout the Nepalese Himalaya. Whether you decide to do the Everest Base Camp trail, or climb one of the eight thousanders in the region, you will come across the prayer rocks along the way. The rocks are engraved with the Tibetan mantra, “oh mani pandme hum,” which translates roughly to “be peaceful and compassionate.” The mantra represents a reminder for those who chant it to channel those attributes towards others and to nature. Our sherpa explained that if one walks on the right side of the prayer rocks while repeating the mantra they will have good luck on their journey. We made sure to practice this routine the entirety of our trip and we came back in one piece!
