Nakasero Market

Market Square Rd, Kampala, Uganda

Smack in the center of the Ugandan capital, Kampala, sits bustling Nakasero Market. The busy market has a live animal section as well as departments for household appliances and clothes and whatever else you might need. There are also plenty of venders selling grasshoppers, a common Ugandan snack. I’m a very adventurous eater but when faced with the prospect of munching on grasshoppers, I suddenly became not very hungry.

Fresh Veggie Paradise

While watching me attempt to slice a tomato with a mini machete without a cutting board, my friend Mugagga commented that even if he’s given a cutting board he doesn’t know how to use it. I then proceeded to hand him the rest of my butchered tomato and the mini machete so we could eat lunch quicker. This amazing local dish is kikomando. It consists of chopped chapatti (like a tortilla) and beans. It was created as cheap street food, but has recently made its way onto restaurant menus. Topped with fresh avocado and tomatoes it becomes a slice of heaven. Or you can make a salad with mango, avocado and tomatoes for a side dish. Any way you slice it, it’s a must eat when in Uganda. You can find it from many of the street vendors or if you’re not so brave, in a local restaurant.
