Walking the Nakasendo Way through Japanese History
I hiked the Nakasendo Way with my brother, Henry and his girlfriend, Natalie along with five other wonderful travelers that we were grouped with. The walk follows one of Japan’s ancient highways, the Nakasendo Way, which translates to 'the road through the mountains’. I can't imagine being introduced to Japanese culture in any other fashion - we ended each night in a Ryokan, wearing our yukatas each night, dipping in to the on-site onsens, eating kaiseki style meals and sleeping soundly on futons on tatame mats before waking up and traveling on foot through small towns and villages that were idyllic and full of history. It was a pre-cursor to Kyoto and Tokyo and set the stage to understand the root of Japanese lifestyle and custom.
