Museum of Reconstruction
One of the tragedies of World War II was the almost complete destruction of northern Norway as the retreating Nazi military set towns ablaze to delay the Soviet armies from pursuing them. Hammerfest was hit especially hard—only the small chapel survived the inferno. This commemorative museum does much more than tell the tale of the city’s reconstruction: It chronicles the human toll of the reconstruction era through firsthand accounts on film. (The gift shop allows you to end on a lighter note—its design mimics a 1950s convenience store.)
