A very interesting museum can be found in Penafiel, 30 minutes from Porto. It’s a Municipal Museum, located in the heart of the historical centre of this city, in an eighteenth century palace. In 2010 was nominated for the European Museum of the Year Award and in the same year won the award for the Best Portuguese Museum.
The collections that can be found in several small rooms, contemplate archaeology, ethnography and local history. In the Crafts Room, we go back to the past to learn about the main traditional craft in those days, mainly using iron and wood.
The Museum also has museologic extensions outside the city centre of Penafiel, such as a water mill in Novelas, the Iron Age archaeological site of Monte Mozinho and an olive oil press at Sebolido.
It doesn’t take much time to visit the Museum and it’s worthwhile to pay a visit.
