Experience the history of coffee in Santos, Brazil

Santos is a large port city on the coast of São Paulo, Brazil. Its historic center is being revitalized. The highlight of its historic center is the Museu do Café, or Coffee Museum. For about $3, you can tour the beautiful interior, see where the coffee barons sat and negotiated the price of coffee beans, and learn about the development of the coffee industry in this part of Brazil. This was an extremely important part of Brazil's history because coffee led to roads being built, cities being developed, slaves and immigrants working in the fields, and ultimately making Brazil the world leader of coffee production. The exhibit is small but includes interesting photographs and information in English plus nice pamphlets available in several languages.
After the museum, stop in the beautiful café near the front entrance and enjoy typical Brazilian pastries with excellent espresso. There you can shop for souvenirs and watch fresh coffee beans being roasted, but be careful about purchasing--the coffee here is very expensive.
The museum is open Tues.-Sat. 9-5 and Sundays 10-5.
The rest of the historic center can be toured by tram. Parking garages are located near the museum and charge about $5/hour.
The website is in Portuguese http://www.museudocafe.com.br/index.asp but this additional link provides an overview of both the museum and its café:
