The Bordalo Pinheiro Museum is about the life and work of the caricaturist and ceramist Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro. He was born in 1846 and he is a key figure of the 19th century. One of his best-known pieces is Zé Povinho, which is a representation of the Portuguese people. This piece and most of his work is full of humor, wisdom and critics of the political system.
The museum was built by a friend of Bordalo Pinheiro, the poet Cruz Magalhães. It has displays of paintings, drawings and ceramics which include the pieces with plant and animal world theme. In the library you can find some of the publications by the caricaturist and if you cross the garden and head to the Lisbon Museum, you can visit its gardens where you will find some of his ceramic pieces.
