The capital of Quintana Roo, Chetumal is a great place to base yourself for a couple nights in order to explore some of the surrounding attractions, including several Maya archaeological sites and the Bacalar Lagoon, before jumping across the boarder into Belize or heading west across the southern Yucatan Peninsula on Carretera Federal 186 towards Campeche. One of the unexpected highlights of Chetumal is the Museo de la Cultura Maya. The museum maintains a wealth of exhibits featuring real and replica artifacts, recreated dwellings and models of well known Maya sites and monuments from all over the Maya world. The museum is much larger than I anticipated and takes a good couple of hours to explore properly. The museum does an excellent job of telling the Maya story from prehistory to modern times and has several displays explaining and modeling the Maya world view and astrology in great detail. A trip to the museum makes your visit to the Maya world much more meaningful.
